Xi Jinping Meets with Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei

On November 10, 2014, President Xi Jinping met with Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei at the Great Hall of the People.

Xi Jinping pointed out that China and Brunei have adhered to mutual respect and equal treatment and set a model for small and big nations to coexist harmoniously with mutual benefits and win-win results. Last year, you and I, we both agreed to upgrade the China-Brunei relations to strategic cooperative relations, and that both sides should enhance high-level exchanges and strategic mutual trust. The Chinese side is willing to strengthen cooperation with Brunei in the upstream-downstream oil and gas industry and new energy, to encourage Chinese enterprises to expand investment in Brunei, and to enhance cooperation in infrastructure construction, agriculture and fishery. The Chinese side is willing to strengthen maritime cooperation with Brunei, achieve early and substantial progress in the joint development of the South China Sea, jointly promote the sound development of the relations between China and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), and promote regional peace, stability and prosperity.

Hassanal said that China is a trustworthy friend of Brunei. The Bruneian side speaks highly of the initiatives put forward by President Xi Jinping to construct the Silk Road Economic Belt and the Maritime Silk Road of the 21st Century, appreciates China’s important contributions to safeguarding regional peace and stability, supports the agenda of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Informal Leadership Meeting formulated by the Chinese side, and is willing to work with China to promote ASEAN-China solidarity and cooperation and the Asia-Pacific integration progress. Brunei, as a founding member, will actively participate in the construction of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank.
