2014/11/10

On November 10, 2014, President Xi Jinping met with President Park Geun-hye of the Republic of Korea (ROK) at the Great Hall of the People.

Xi Jinping pointed out that during my visit to the ROK this July, we reached broad consensus on enriching and deepening China-ROK strategic and cooperative partnership, especially in agreeing to accelerate the pace of negotiations on the agreement on China-ROK free trade area (FTA). I am pleased to learn that both sides just concluded the substantive negotiations on the agreement on the China-ROK FTA. The establishment of the FTA is of milestone significance and will vigorously promote the integration in Asia-Pacific region. I am willing to maintain communication with you to exchange views on major issues in a timely manner, always hold the direction of bilateral friendly cooperation and promote bilateral practical cooperation and people-to-people and cultural exchanges for more fruitful results, so as to make China and the ROK good neighbors and good partners neighboring to each other and advancing shoulder to shoulder.

Park Geun-hye said that today is a day that both the ROK and China should celebrate together. The establishment of ROK-China FTA is a great news for global economic recovery and development and prosperity in Asia. The ROK will continue to make efforts to push the relevant agreement for conclusion and coming into effect at an early date. It is hoped that both sides could continue upholding cooperation spirits and promoting ROK-China strategic and cooperative partnership for continuous new results. The ROK side believes that China hosting the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Informal Leadership Meeting will strongly push forward the integration process in the region and the ROK side is willing to actively study on issues related to joining the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB).

Xi Jinping stressed that China’s position on the Korean Peninsula issue is clear and consistent. It is hoped that all parties could show sincerity and take a flexible position to restart the Six-Party Talks and seek a practical and effective approach acceptable to all parties. China supports the ROK to improve the relations between the South and the North on the Korean Peninsula through dialogue.

Park Geun-hye briefed on relevant position and stance of the ROK and said that the ROK attaches importance to the important role played by China in the affairs related to the Korean Peninsula and hopes to enhance communication and coordination with the Chinese side to create favorable conditions for an early resumption of the Six-Party Talks.
