Li Keqiang Holds Meeting with President Herman Van Rompuy of the European Council and President José Manuel Barroso of the European Commission

In the evening of October 15, 2014 local time, Premier Li Keqiang held a meeting with President Herman Van Rompuy of the European Council and President José Manuel Barroso of the European Commission in Milan.

Li Keqiang said that China attaches great importance to developing relations with the EU and appreciates the two Presidents for their contributions to promoting China-EU relationship during their tenure.The China-EU 2020 Strategic Agenda for Cooperation was formulated during the 16th China-EU Summit. China is willing to, together with the EU side, take the 40th anniversary of the China-EU diplomatic relationship as an opportunity to usher in a new prospect for bilateral relations.

Li Keqiang pointed out that the EU is the largest trading partner of China and both sides serve as development opportunities to each other. The two sides should earnestly implement the China-EU partnerships for peace, growth, reform and civilization, cement mutual trust, carry out all-round cooperation in economy, trade, energy, urbanization, connectivity, finance, science and technology, and people-to-people and cultural engagement, speed up the steps of the negotiations on China-EU investment agreement, and well organize the Year of China-EU Partnership next year. He hopes that both sides could stick to the principles of mutual respect and equal treatment and properly solve frictions and divergence through dialogues and consultations, so as to ensure the healthy and stable development of China-EU relations.

Li Keqiang stressed that the prosperity of Europe conduces to the development of world. At present, the European integration process is speeding up and the Euro, as major global currency, keeps stable, which will play a positive role in promoting world multi-polarization and diversification of international reserve currency. China and Europe should enhance communication and coordination in international and regional affairs and jointly promote the peace and development of the world.

Herman Van Rompuy and José Manuel Barroso expressed that Europe and China enjoy extensive common interests and broad cooperation space, and the bilateral cooperation in various fields is making positive progress constantly. The EU is committed to the structural reform and promotion of European integration. The EU is grateful to China for its confidence in and support to Europe and Euro, and will continue firmly adhering to a friendly policy towards China, maintain close dialogue and cooperation with the Chinese side on the principles of mutual respect, mutual benefits and win-win results, earnestly implement the EU-China 2020 Strategic Agenda for Cooperation, properly solve trade frictions, sign the EU-China investment agreement at an early date, and provide a better environment for the Chinese investors. The EU is willing to join efforts with the Chinese side to promote Europe-Asia cooperation and jointly address the global challenges, pushing forward the continuous development of EU-China relations in a more vigorous manner. They hoped that both sides could hold the 17th EU-China Summit at an early date.
