Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong of Singapore Meets with Yang Jiechi

On August 29, 2014, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong of Singapore met with the visiting State Councilor Yang Jiechi.

Yang Jiechi said that President Xi Jinping met with President Tony Tan Keng Yam in Nanjing not long ago, and the two heads of state both stressed to develop the China-Singapore relationship from a strategic and long-term perspective. Next year marks the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the diplomatic relationship between the two countries. Both sides should take this as an important opportunity to strengthen high-level exchanges, deepen understanding and mutual trust, and better plan and guide cooperation in various fields, so as to promote the bilateral relations into a new and higher level. Suzhou Industrial Park and Tianjin Eco-City have become the models of China-Singapore cooperation. Both sides should, continuously and closely integrating their respective development strategies, give full play to their own advantages and conduct more cooperation.

Yang Jiechi stressed that it is China's unswerving policy to strengthen the good-neighborly friendship and mutually beneficial cooperation with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). China is willing to actively negotiate and sign the treaty of good-neighborliness and friendly cooperation with ASEAN, jointly promote the development of the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) and upgrade the level of the China-ASEAN Free Trade Area (CAFTA). Singapore will take over as the coordinating country for China-ASEAN relations next year, and China is willing to work together with Singapore to promote the greater development of the China-ASEAN relationship.

Yang Jiechi welcomed Lee Hsien Loong to attend the China-ASEAN Expo to be held in Nanning this September and the Informal Economic Leaders' Meeting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) to be held in Beijing this November. He hoped that both sides strengthen communication and coordination and push forward relevant meetings for positive results, so as to boost trade liberalization and facilitation and promote prosperity in the Asia-Pacific region.

Yang Jiechi also expounded China's principled stance on the South China Sea issue.

Lee Hsien Loong said that Singapore hopes to, taking the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the diplomatic relationship between the two countries as a new milestone, promote the bilateral cooperation for more fruitful achievements. Singapore hopes to realize exchanges of visits between the leaders of the two countries in commemoration of the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the diplomatic relationship between the two countries, and welcomes President Xi Jinping to pay a state visit to Singapore. Singapore is ready to play a constructive role in promoting the development of ASEAN-China relations. He is looking forward to visiting China to attend the ASEAN-China Expo and the APEC Informal Economic Leaders' Meeting, and is willing to cooperate with China to make these two events a success. Singapore attaches importance to China's position on the South China Sea issue and hopes that all the relevant parties make joint efforts to maintain peace and stability in the South China Sea.

On the same day, Yang Jiechi also met respectively with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Tharman Shanmugaratnam, Emeritus Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong, and Minister for Foreign Affairs Kasiviswanathan Shanmugam of Singapore, and made in-depth exchanges of views with them on the development of the bilateral relations and practical cooperation as well as international and regional topics of common interest.
