Chinese Government Interdepartmental Working Group Holds Counterpart Talks with Relevant Departments of Viet Nam

On May 16, 2014, the interdepartmental working group of the Chinese government led by Assistant Foreign Minister Liu Jianchao held counterpart talks with the joint working group led by Deputy Foreign Minister Pham Quang Vinh of Viet Nam in Hanoi, and met with Executive Deputy Minister of Public Security Dang Van Hieu of Viet Nam.

Liu Jianchao said, recently serious violent incidents of beating, smashing, looting and burning occurred in quite a few places in Viet Nam, causing casualties and major property damages to Chinese citizens. The Communist Party of China (CPC) and the Chinese government attach great importance to the safety of Chinese citizens. The Chinese side strongly urges the Vietnamese side to properly deal with the aftermath work of the victims and the treatment of the injured, to enhance the study and judgment of information as well as police deployment, so as to ensure the safety of the lives and properties of all Chinese institutions and personnel in Viet Nam. China also urges for continued investigation, arrest and harsh punishment of all perpetrators according to law, make sure that violent incidents do not recur, and for the next stage, providing all convenience for the arrangement of Chinese citizens.

Pham Quang Vinh expressed that the Vietnamese side did not wish to see such violent incidents as happened lately. The Vietnamese side once again expresses regret for the losses of people's lives and properties of the Chinese side. After these incidents, the Vietnamese side immediately took resolute measures and mobilized all forces to strengthen the protection for the Chinese enterprises and personnel. The Vietnamese side is willing to reaffirm that they would continue to take all measures to protect with all-out efforts the safety of Chinese institutions and personnel so that similar incidents could be completely prevented.

Dang Van Hieu said that the Vietnamese government and the Public Security Ministry paid great attention to the occurrence of relevant incidents. They immediately strengthened the police force, intensified the protection for the Chinese enterprises and personnel, and arrested suspected criminals. Up till now, more than 1,000 criminal suspects have been arrested and being prosecuted by law. Now the situation tends to be stable. The Vietnamese Public Security departments will continue to take effective measures to ensure the safety of Chinese institutions and personnel in Viet Nam.
