Li Keqiang Meets with President Anibal Cavaco Silva of Portugal

In the afternoon of May 16, 2014, Premier Li Keqiang met with President Anibal Cavaco Silva of Portugal at the Great Hall of the People.

Li Keqiang expressed that, China-Portugal relations now enjoy sound development and the foundation of the bilateral cooperation going more solid. President Xi Jinping and Mr. President held talks yesterday, which yielded a series of fruitful results. The Chinese side is willing to work with the Portuguese side, taking the opportunity of the 35th anniversary of the establishment of the diplomatic relationship between the two countries, to deepen political mutual trust through exchanges at various levels, to strengthen convergence of interests through all-round cooperation, so as to keep elevating the level of China-Portugal comprehensive strategic partnership.

Li Keqiang stated, the Chinese side would like to extend congratulations to the Portuguese side for it has positively addressed the challenges of the international financial crisis and will soon return to the international market for financing. The two countries are faced with new opportunities to expand practical cooperation. China stands ready to scale up bilateral trade and investment with Portugal, to expand cooperation in the fields of ocean development and utilization, new energy, agriculture and fishery, and to deepen China's relations with the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP). The Chinese side supports enterprises of both countries to give play to their respective advantages and to join hands to develop the third-party market, so as to realize mutual benefits and win-win results.

Silva expressed that since the establishment of the Portugal-China diplomatic relationship, bilateral relations have achieved significant development. Both sides have set an example for the world with the smooth settlement through friendly consultation of the Macao issue, which left over from history. China's development is conducive to Europe and the world. The Portuguese side thanks the Chinese side for offering valuable support and help to Portugal in overcoming the international financial crisis. Silva said that Premier Li Keqiang recently paid a successful visit to Africa. Portugal is ready, working with China, to develop the third-party market, to expand bilateral cooperation in various fields, to promote a bigger and stronger Forum for Economic and Trade Cooperation Between Portuguese-speaking Countries and China, and to constantly deepen bilateral comprehensive strategic partnership, with a view to achieve common development.
