2014/04/25

On April 24, 2014, Premier Li Keqiang met in Ziguangge, Zhongnanhai with the congressional delegation led by Majority Leader Eric Cantor of the US House of Representatives.

Li Keqiang expressed that the development of the bilateral relations over the past 35 years since the establishment of the China-US diplomatic relationship demonstrates that development and prosperity of both countries have brought opportunities to each other. The two heads of state recently held a successful meeting during their attendance at the Nuclear Security Summit in The Hague. Under new circumstances, both sides should respect each other and expand dialogue and cooperation and properly address differences based on the principles of the three China-US Joint Communiqués and the basic norms governing international relations, so as to facilitate sound and stable development of China-US relations.

Li Keqiang stressed, China never wavers in its determination of adhereing to the path of peaceful development and of safeguarding its national sovereignty and territorial integrity. We are willing to join hands with other countries, to safeguard world and regional peace and stability and to promote development and cooperation. China and the US are highly complementary with huge potential for cooperation and the common interests far outweigh differences. China is comprehensively deepening reforms and further expanding opening-up, which will bring more new opportunities to China-US cooperation. The two sides should accelerate negotiations on investment agreements and deepen cooperation in various fields. China hopes the US side will loosen restrictions on exports of high technologies to China and provide a fair competition environment for Chinese enterprises to invest in the US. China encourages US congressmen to pay more visits to China to enhance mutual understanding and play a constructive role in the development of China-US relations.

Cantor expressed that as a Pacific country, the future of the US is not only closely related to the Asia-Pacific region but also closely linked to US-China relationship which always keeps developing and strengthening. The House of Representatives and the congressmen of the US are willing to make efforts to improve the bilateral relations, deepen mutually beneficial cooperation, promote common prosperity, and enhance friendly interaction between the two peoples.

Both sides also exchanged views on international and regional issues of common concern. Li Keqiang stated China's position on the South China Sea issue and Diaoyu Dao issue.
