The Welcome Reception and Spring Festival Culture Night successfully held

On February 23rd, the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Barbados successfully held a welcome reception in honour of the arrival of H.E. Yan Xiusheng, the new Chinese Ambassador to Barbados and the Spring Festival Culture Night in celebrating the Chinese Lunar New Year. Over 200 people including H.E. Yan Xiusheng, Governor General H.E. Dame Sandra Mason, Chief Justice The Hon. Sir Marston Gibson, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Senator the Hon. Maxine McClean, Minister of Culture, Sports and Youth the Hon. Stephen Lashley, Minister of Housing the Hon. Denis Kellman, Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office The Hon. Patrick Todd and other government officials of Barbados, representatives of the diplomatic corps, representatives from the Chinese companies, Confucius Institute of U.W.I. Cave Hill Campus, Chinese medical team and the Chinese diaspora in Barbados attended this event.

During his speech, Ambassador H.E. Yan Xiusheng expressed that 41 years since the establishment of the diplomatic relations between China and Barbados, the friendly pragmatic relations between our two countries have been keeping its healthy developing momentum, great achievements have been made in the cooperation of politics, the economy and trade, culture, education, health care and other areas. China-Barbados relations have been in the fast developing lane and in its best position in history.

Ambassador H.E. Yan Xiusheng pointed out that last October, the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China declared that socialism with Chinese characteristics has entered a new era and established Xi Jinping’s Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era. This is the new junction in China’s development, and it will be an era of securing a decisive victory in building a modern and prosperous society in all respects and moving on to building a great modern socialist country. 2018 marks the first year after the successful conclusion of the 19th CPC Congress which charted the course for China’s future development. This year also commemorates the 40th anniversary of China’s Reform and Opening-up Policy. China and Barbados need to enhance their dialogue and mutual trust, proactively implement the outcomes of the China-CELAC Forum and introduce the “Belt and Road” initiative to Barbados and strive for an early harvest to fulfill the prospect of the initiative so as to deepen our bilateral relations in all respects.

Minister Maxine McClean welcomed Ambassador H.E. Yan Xiusheng to assume office in Barbados and emphasized that the Barbados government always attached great importance to the development of bilateral friendly relations between China and Barbados. The Barbados government is satisfied with the fruitful results of pragmatic cooperation in all areas between the two countries, and is willing to work closely with Ambassador H.E. Yan Xiusheng and the Chinese Embassy in Barbados to implement the consensus reached at the Second Ministerial Meeting for the China-CELAC Forum, to promote the building of the “Belt and Road” Initiative and take it as an opportunity to promote the overall friendly cooperative relationship between China and Barbados in all aspects.

During the reception, the Chinese Embassy in Barbados and the Confucius Institute of U.W.I. Cave Hill Campus showcased the Chinese traditions and culture such as tea art, Chinese calligraphy, paper-cutting and dumpling making to the audience. Ambassador H.E. Yan Xiusheng accompanied the Governor General, H.E. Dame Sandra Mason, and other distinguished guests to experience them one by one. The Beautiful Tianjin Art Troupe presented a wonderful performance to the guests. Pictures and videos introducing the “Belt and Road” Initiative, Happy Chinese New Year and other development achievements were also displayed at the reception.
