Your Excellency Sir Elliott Belgrave, the Governor-General,

Hon. Freundel Stuart, the Prime Minister,

Hon. Sir Marston Gibson, the Chief Justice,

Hon. Members of the Parliament, Ministers, Permanent Secretaries,

Distinguished Representatives of Diplomatic Corps,

Friends from Media,

Distinguished Guests,

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Good Evening! First of all, on behalf of the Chinese Embassy in Barbados, I would like to extend my warmest welcome to you all for joining 1.3 billion Chinese people in celebrating 64th anniversary of the Founding of the People's Republic of China. I would also like to take this opportunity to express our gratitude for the friends who have long cared about China and supported China-Barbados friendship.

As a country with a long history and outstanding contribution to the progress of human civilization, China in the modern times has gone through all kinds of hardships and gradually reduced to a semi-colonial and semi-feudal society. The founders of New China, with a vision to rejuvenate the Chinese nation, led Chinese people fought wave upon wave, finally established the People's Republic of China on October 1, 1949, achieving national independence and the liberation of the people while opening a new era in the Chinese history.

Since the founding of the People's Republic of China 64 years ago, particularly since the reform and opening up some 30 years ago, Chinese people of all ethnicities banded together and strode ahead for the realization of the Chinese dream. Now, Chinese economy is the second largest in the world; people's living standard keeps improving; social justice, democracy and the legal system keeps progressing. The beginning of this year saw a smooth transition of the Chinese government. The new generation of leaders headed by President Xi Jinping pledged to speed up the reform in administration, finance, agriculture etc and announced that China's growth in the coming years should be predicated on higher quality and efficiency, bolstered by resource conservation and environmental protection, and driven by technological innovation and advance. It has to be a growth with sufficient employment and growing household income. In other words, we need to ensure the fruits of reform and development benefit as many people as possible.

While pursuing its own development, China has made great contributions to the peace and development of the world. Statistics from the International Monetary Fund show that China has contributed to nearly one-fourth of the global economic growth since breakout of the global financial crisis. It is projected that in the next five years, the total value of China's imported products will reach $10 trillion, and the value of total foreign investment will surpass $500 billion, providing massive opportunities for the development of other countries.

China will unswervingly take the path of peaceful development and pursue the independent foreign policy of peace. China will also promote the establishment of the harmonious world and common development of the human society. Therefore, Chinese dream will not only bring benefits to the Chinese people, but also to the whole world. While pursuing the realization of Chinese dream, 1.3 billion Chinese people will also work together with the international community to realize the world dream of long-lasting peace and common prosperity, to contribute to the noble cause of peace and development of the mankind.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

China and Barbados are both developing countries. In the fight for liberation, in the pursuit of economic and social development and in the promotion of a more just, democratic and harmonious international political and economic order, China and Barbados sympathize and support each other, cultivating a strong friendship. Since the establishment of diplomatic ties 36 years ago, China and Barbados maintain close political relations with frequent high-level visit and people to people exchange. The bilateral economic and trade relations developed rapidly, cooperation in other areas are fruitful and coordination in international affairs are significantly strengthened. China had provided Barbados with assistance within its capacity and Barbados rendered strong support to China in many areas. It can be said that Barbados has long been an invaluable friend of China in its pursuit of the Chinese dreams.

We are happy to see that this year China Barbados relations are colorful and full of highlights. In June, during Chinese President Xi Jinping's visit to Trinidad and Tobago, President Xi and Prime Minister Stuart successfully held a bilateral meeting. Both leaders agreed to further deepen mutual trust and create new bright spot in practical cooperation which is of over-arching importance to the cooperation in the areas of trade, renewable energy, agriculture, tourism, culture and education. In April, China international trade representative and Vice Minister of Commerce, Mr. Zhong Shan visited Barbados. He met with Prime Minister Stuart and exchanged views extensively with Minister Maxine McClean, Minister Donville Inniss and Minister Darcy Boyce. In June, Agricultural Minister Estwick visited China to attend the First Meeting of China-Latin America and the Caribbean Agricultural Ministers' Forum during which Minister Estwick also attended a bilateral meeting with Chinese Agricultural Minister Han Changfu. These visits and meetings greatly enhanced bilateral consensus and laid a solid foundation for furthering practical cooperation. Not long ago, Foreign Minister Maxine McClean and I had signed an Economic and Technical Cooperation Agreement and currently both sides are intensively exchanging views on some new economic and trade cooperation projects. Some of the projects for which the conditions are ripe and are set to benefit Barbadian people and the economy will formally commence in the near future. After China has sent a teacher to teach Mandarin in the University of West Indies at Cave Hill Campus, both sides are now planning to bring a Confucius Institute to the Campus which will be a new platform for academic, cultural and scientific exchange. Here I have to mention that, in August, Barbadian people enjoyed a China-Barbados cultural feast: Chinese Shaolin Kung Fu and acrobatics mixed with Barbadian style music and dancing, adding beauty to each other. 5000 strong audience packed the Gymnasium, making it a sea of joy. It fully embodied the friendship between our peoples.

Additionally, I want to share a good news with you. Today at our reception, there is a shooting group from China Central Television. They specifically came to Barbados to produce a two-episode documentary called "Glamorous Barbados", introducing the beautiful sceneries and unique culture to Chinese people and the world at large.

Apart from those examples, there are a lot of other on-going programs between China and Barbados. I have very good reason to believe that with the consensus and determination of our leaders, with the support from all walks of life in China and Barbados, the cooperation between our two countries will be more fruitful and the friendship between our two people will be stronger.

Tomorrow is the Mid Autumn Festival in the traditional Chinese calendar and the moon will be at its roundest and brightest. It is a day for families to get together. Therefore I would like to wish everybody a happy family.

Finally, please allow me to propose a toast,

to the 64th anniversary of the People's Republic of China;

to the prosperity of our two countries and the well-being of our peoples;

to the friendship between our peoples;

to the health of all the distinguished guests,
